Six members of the South Florida Heart Institute (SFHI) in Delray Beach have been recognized by Castle Connolly for excellence in the field of cardiology. “The recognition of our group by Castle Connolly demonstrates the high quality of patient care provided by each of our physicians,” says Eric H. Lieberman, M.D., Vice Chief of the Medical Staff at Delray Medical Center and National Director of Cardiology for Tenet Healthcare and Regional Medical Director of Cardiology for the Palm Beach Health Network. “It’s not just one or two of us who stand out. It recognizes the group and how we work as a team.”
The group sees patients with active cardiac issues and those looking to preventatively assess and reduce their risk. They also see patients who have cardiac issues related to their oncologic care. Plus, they offer innovative and advanced treatments for patients with heart failure and cardiomyopathy. Physicians’ cardiovascular subspecialties include preventive cardiology, invasive/interventional cardiology, cardio-oncology and advanced heart failure. “We deliver evidence-based, quality medical care,” says Dr. Lieberman. “Our goal is to strive to provide care that offers the greatest benefit with the lowest risk.”
SFHI understands that education is a key component to effective healthcare delivery. “The more educated a patient is, the better they can participate in their own healthcare. They have better outcomes because they understand what we’re trying to do and why.” They’re also firm believers in communication. “Patients hear directly from us.”
Their patient population includes adults and often multiple generations. “It is not uncommon for us to see three generations in the same family,” says Dr. Lieberman. “It means a lot to us to see patient-to-patient family referrals. It is the ultimate vote of confidence.”
The patients are what it’s all about. “I love getting patients through a challenging situation to a favorable outcome,” says Dr. Lieberman. He sees general cardiology patients, while also focusing on cardio-oncology and preventive cardiology. “It is rewarding when I hear about them attending an event after a heart attack like a grandchild’s wedding or family celebration that they wouldn’t have thought was possible.”
Other practice members include Mark Fisher, M.D., an interventional cardiologist, specializing in diagnosing and treating coronary artery disease. He is medical director of the practice’s nuclear cardiology laboratory. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.
Jonathan Kahan, M.D., serves as Director of the FAU/Delray Cardiology Fellowship Program. He performs echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography and CT coronary angiography, in addition to his patient care. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiac CTA and Echocardiography.
Benjamin Ravaee, M.D., is Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Delray Medical Center. He is a noninvasive cardiologist who treats conditions including heart attacks, heart disease and valvular heart disease. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Echocardiography.
Jonathan J. Vafai, M.D., Chief of Cardiology at Delray Medical Center. He is board certified in Cardiology, Nuclear Cardiology, Echocardiography and Internal Medicine. His interests include echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and stress testing.
Arthur P. Weiner, M.D., an interventional cardiologist, is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease. He specializes in cardiac consultation, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.
All practice members serve as the core faculty for the Florida Atlantic University (FAU)/Delray Medical Center Cardiovascular Fellowship training program and are on the faculty at FAU.
All six physicians have taken on leadership roles within the medical center to elevate care and monitor quality of care beyond their cardiology practice.
