Erica R. Podolsky, M.D., FASMBS, is the founder and Medical Director of the nationally recognized Surgical Weight and Obesity Program at Delray Medical Center. The program offers a multimodal approach including nonsurgical and surgical options. “The recent addition of improved drugs for weight loss has increased the awareness and respect for obesity as a disease enabling us to treat a larger population.” Bariatric surgery offers patients suffering from devastating chronic diseases like diabetes the opportunity to go into remission without needing medications. Bariatric surgery treats a long list of medical issues such as heart disease and infertility and decreases the risk of many cancers.
She offers a concierge-level pre-op and post-op program to all patients centered around her all-female team. “What I do is based on a program of support,” says Dr. Podolsky. “Obesity is a chronic medical disease which also has social and psychological factors. We offer a lifelong support system that helps patients treat their obesity for the long term. Having that kind of standard helps support better outcomes.”
Dr. Podolsky performs surgical procedures at Delray Medical Center, a nationally recognized award-winning acute care hospital with a certified surgical weight loss program for the care of obese patients with new operating suites and the latest technology and private patient rooms.
Dr. Podolsky specializes in minimally invasive surgery using laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery to treat multiple abdominal conditions such as reflux and hernias. “We can do the same advanced surgeries through small incisions which allows for rapid recovery with decreased pain, shorter hospital stays and quicker return to daily activities.”
Dr. Podolsky is the Vice Chief of Medical Staff, the Chair of the Credentials Committee and the Director of FAU third-year medical students at Delray Medical Center. She is a partner at Palm Beach Surgical, a multispecialty general surgery practice with Palm Beach Health Network Physician Group in Delray Beach offering treatment for general, endocrine and colorectal surgery.
She earned her medical degree at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and did her residency in general surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. She completed her fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery in the Department of Surgery at Duke University.
