A good night’s sleep is an essential part of your health. When sleep is interrupted, whether from excessive snoring, irregular breathing or restless leg syndrome, quality of life suffers. This leads to loss of concentration, forgetfulness, as well as tiredness and fatigue.

Douglas J. Black, M.D., a board-certified neurologist and board-certified sleep specialist, is helping patients sleep soundly with the brand-new state-of-the-art sleep lab at Boca Raton Neurologic Associates.

The sleep lab offers a Polysomnography sleep assessment in a luxurious and comfortable spa-like setting with varied pillow choices, a sound machine and aromatherapy on request.  Experienced, licensed and certified sleep technicians closely monitor sleep patterns overnight.

“The ideal patient is somebody who finds they need to sleep during the daytime and snores loudly at night and has interrupted breathing,” says Dr. Black. “Sleep apnea is common, but we look at patients with other symptoms and conditions including restless legs, insomnia and more.”

Neurologists are uniquely qualified to treat sleep disorders because they understand the many conditions that can contribute to sleepless nights.  Patients initially consult with Dr. Black who explains everything in detail to make sure patients have a positive experience. Appointments can be scheduled very quickly.

“The night of their visit, we can provide diagnostics and treatments at the same time,” Dr. Black says. “For many patients, we can start treatment the first night.”

For common diagnoses, like sleep apnea, specialists work with patients on options to optimize their sleep.

“They may not need a CPAP machine; there are alternative treatments to whatever condition they have,” Dr. Black says.

He enjoys the field because of the difference he makes in a person’s quality of life.

“Good sleep lowers risk factors for other conditions,” Dr. Black says. “For some patients who haven’t been sleeping well for years…after a sleep study, they may only need to make one little adjustment and their lives are different and happier.”
