Stroke is among the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, which is why it’s so important to Brian M. Snelling, M.D., that everyone knows the signs.
Dr. Snelling is director of Cerebrovascular & Endovascular Neurosurgery and medical director of the Marilyn & Stanley Barry Center for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute in Boca Raton.
He is a fellowship-trained vascular neurosurgeon specializing in the surgical and endovascular treatment of disorders of the brain and spine. Dr. Snelling also treats and works to prevent brain aneurysms.
Dr. Snelling not only oversees the treatment of stroke patients – from the time they enter until the time they leave – but he also works to educate first responders to recognize the signs of stroke so patients get the treatment they need quickly.
“You want to make sure the patient gets to the hospital so we can deliver lifesaving treatments, whether it’s medication or surgery, in a way to save brain tissue and return patients to a normal life,” says Dr. Snelling, who came to the Institute in 2018.
When he arrived, he was tasked with building a world-class stroke program to provide not only emergency, lifesaving stroke treatment but also non-emergent or elective treatment for patients.
“Due to the generosity of a lot of benefactors in our community, we have unparalleled access to technology and innovation at the hospital,” says Dr. Snelling. “That includes the most state-of-the-art surgical devices; we have unlimited access to the best surgical equipment and technology of any hospital in the state.”
The Institute also is one of only two JCAHO-certified thrombectomy-capable stroke centers in Palm Beach County, a designation of excellence in the care of stroke patients.
Dr. Snelling, who has a background in biomedical engineering, was drawn to neurosurgery because it incorporates the use of technology into procedures more than any other surgical specialty.
“Vascular neurosurgery offers the ability to have dramatic, lifesaving outcomes on patients who are at risk of significant disability,” he says. “You can take someone dying and, in a matter of minutes, bring them back to normal neurological function.”
