Dr. Philip Saville

Orthopedic Spine Surgeon

Dr. Philip Saville has one goal as an Orthopedic Spine surgeon specializing in minimally invasive spinal surgery — getting his patients back to enjoying their daily activities

After seeing how minimally invasive surgery helped those who were injured compared to traditional spinal surgery, Dr. Saville says he immediately gravitated toward that. “I was also drawn towards the science behind the procedure, the recovery is quicker, the blood loss is minimal, the pain is a lot less and it gets you back to doing what you want to do quicker without destroying healthy tissue to get to the bad tissue,” he says.

His passion for cutting-edge technology and the 16 years of experience, including completing a spine surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, which specializes in orthopedic surgery, give Dr. Saville the success he needs to guide patients back to their best selves.

“I’m grateful to have gained the knowledge and training from some of the top leaders in the field. So, when our surgical patients return happy that their pain is gone and that they’re back to playing their favorite sport, exercising regularly and moving around comfortably, I’m thrilled to see it,” Dr. Saville says.

But before he recommends minimally invasive surgery, pain management is his first go-to. “Surgery is a last resort. I recommend trying other options such as injection therapy, physical therapy, or medication tailored toward the problem of concern,” says Dr. Saville, who often lets his patients determine when surgery is on the table.

When it’s time to operate, Dr. Saville uses small incisions, a microscope and navigation software that ensures the position of the hardware is correct. He also has miniature tubes that allow him to access spinal discs that were damaged. With this method, he says, other parts of the spine and muscles are safe from disruption, and he’s able to relieve the pressure from the spine, providing as much ease as possible.

“Once their quality of life is in jeopardy, and the pain becomes unbearable, surgery can provide a pain-free lifestyle we all want,” he says
