A board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Gelb has been practicing for 28 years. He holds a subspecialty certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine. He specializes in treating athletic injuries of the shoulder, knee, hip and elbow. He sees high school, collegiate, professional and recreational athletes from a wide range of sports including soccer, basketball, baseball, football, tennis, golf, pickleball and mixed martial arts.

He frequently performs arthroscopic surgery using state-of-the-art technology that results in quicker recovery time. Arthroscopic rotator cuff and shoulder stabilizations comprise a large portion of his operative cases. “I like getting people back to their activities and improving their lifestyles.”

He tailors his treatment to his patient’s athletic goals. “It doesn’t matter if you’re doing yoga or running races,” says Dr. Gelb. “If your doctor doesn’t know anything about the sport, you’re going to be unable to receive tailored treatment.” He incorporates technologies like ultrasound and robotics when treating patients. “Surgical technology and techniques are always evolving.”

Dr. Gelb uses a minimally invasive method to treat ACL and meniscal tears, both common injuries among adult and pediatric athletes. One of his goals is to preserve the meniscus which also improves knee stability. He tailors his ACL treatment based on the patient’s injury, age and activities. His onsite physical therapists help streamline and maximize recovery.

Dr. Gelb uses PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for nonoperative treatment of various orthopedic conditions including knee arthritis and tendinitis. PRP contains protein and growth factors which help improve pain and inflammation. It comes from a simple blood draw done right in the office followed by the use of a special centrifuge.

Dr. Gelb received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He remained at the University of Pennsylvania for his residency. He completed an Orthopedic Fellowship in Sports Medicine, Knee and Shoulder Reconstruction at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center.
