The South Florida Proton Therapy Institute (SFPTI) is a radiation oncology center on the campus of Delray Medical Center. Led by medical director Tim R. Williams, M.D., SFPTI has been treating patients since 2018. Dr. Williams has been a practicing oncologist in the South Florida area for over 32 years and has treated over 13,000 patients with radiation. 

SFPTI offers proton therapy, the most advanced form of radiation treatment. Before the center opened, patients had to travel to Jacksonville or Kendall to receive this specialized treatment. Proton therapy differs from standard X-ray treatments in that protons can deposit all their energy in the tumor itself, with no downstream radiation exposure to normal tissues. This greatly reduces the risks of damage to nearby healthy tissue and makes them much better tolerated than standard X-rays. 

Proton therapy is used to treat nearly any type of cancer, but mostly used for head and neck cancers, brain cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, left breast cancer and pediatric tumors. “Proton therapy offers the most technologically advanced treatment available,” says Dr. Williams. “The unique characteristics of proton therapy offer patients, not only far fewer side effects, but the chance of increased tumor control as well. Protons deliver on average, less than half of the radiation dose to healthy tissue compared to traditional X-ray radiation therapy.” Proton therapy is very versatile and can be used along with chemotherapy, as a follow-up treatment after surgery or as stand-alone therapy.
