Michael Metzger, M.D.: Your Heart Is In His Hands

You don’t have to suffer a heart attack or other serious cardiac episode before seeing a cardiologist. In fact, people as young as their 30s who may have risk factors associated with cardiac disease have a “golden opportunity” to prevent something serious from happening to them, says Michael Metzger, M.D.

“Everyone hears of the 75-year-old who has a heart attack, but what could we have done when he was 45 to prevent that?” says Dr. Metzger, a board certified interventional cardiologist with South Palm Cardiovascular Associates LLC in Delray Beach.

He has spent the last 12 years detecting and diagnosing a full range of cardiovascular disorders through the use of non-invasive testing, such as stress tests and heart monitoring, as well as more invasive procedures, such as cardiac catherization, coronary angiography and coronary stenting.

Dr. Metzger works with patients suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiac arrythmias, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and other cardiac conditions. His patients include those who have a family history of cardiac disease or health conditions that put them at risk as well as those who have symptoms they want investigated.

“Many people come to us who say their dad had a heart attack and they are worried about themselves,” he says.

In addition to cardiac care, Dr. Metzger offers comprehensive management of vein disease. He provides treatment for varicose veins and more serious conditions, including deep vein thrombosis.

His practice offers a variety of treatment options, including VenaSeal, which uses a medical-grade glue to close the main defective vein. It requires only one injection through a small catheter. Unlike other treatments, it doesn’t necessitate numerous injections of anesthesia, there is little pain and there is no need to wear compression stockings after the procedure.

Dr. Metzger understands how important it is to treat every patient like a member of the family.

“My motivation and drive has always been doing the right thing for patients in an honest way, and growth of the practice has always followed,” he says. “If you do the right thing for patients, everything else falls into place.”
