Keeping A Steady Beat

Did you know that your heart’s electrical system controls the timing of your heartbeat? When that beat is off – too fast, too slow or an irregular pattern – it’s called arrhythmia.

The team of specialists at The Arrhythmia Center of South Florida in Delray Beach are leaders in the field of cardiac electrophysiology. The center employs the latest technology to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the heart.

“We start with a comprehensive medical history, an exam and then we can do something as simple as an EKG, a heart monitor or we can implant a device to monitor the heart longer-term,” says Yoel R. Vivas, M.D., F.H.R.S., the founder and one of three specialists at The Arrhythmia Center of South Florida.

All are board certified in clinical cardiac electrophysiology and have more than 30 years of combined experience.

Once a patient is diagnosed, the team determines the best treatment for their condition.

“We use device therapy, such as implanting pacemakers or cardioverter defibrillators, as well as cardiac ablation, a procedure that corrects electrical signals that cause an abnormal heart rhythm,” says Mark Freher, M.D., F.A.C.C., a pioneer in the field of left atrial appendage occlusion.

Smoking; stress; and stimulants, such as caffeine or drugs, are just a few of the reasons people develop an irregular heartbeat.

As the population ages, atrial fibrillation, or AFib, a form of arrhythmia, becomes more prevalent. As a result, Dr. Vivas and his team are set to open a clinic specifically designed to diagnose and treat patients with AFib.

While being diagnosed with a heart condition can be frightening, the doctors at the center are known for spending time with patients, answering all questions and explaining all risks clearly and thoroughly.

“Through accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, we help our patients to restore and maintain a normal heart rhythm,” says Luis F. Mora, M.D.
